RedBox Promo Code for September 15th

Okay, so I don't know if anyone actually takes advantage of my random weekly RedBox messages, Eric said something along the lines of 'what's a RedBox?' a while ago, so allow me to explain a little better what these promo codes are and why I keep posting about them… So, every Monday I’ve been posting a goofy looking 6 digit ‘promo code’ and telling everyone to go get a free movie rental, but seeing as how I haven’t gotten any sort of confirmation that anyone is taking me up on my offer, here’s the deal. The official answer given by the company to Eric’s question is as follows:

Redbox (full name: redbox automated retail LLC--sorta like Throckmorton Automated Monkeyshins III) is the leading renter of DVDs through automated kiosks in the known universe. Redbox continues to revolutionize, scandalize and reorganize the DVD rental industry as it expands its red footprint inside McDonald's restaurants and grocery stores such as Smith's Food & Drug Stores, Giant and Stop & Shop. Don't be surprised if redbox shows up in other locations, either.

So, basically it is an automated DVD rental machine that allows you to rent a movie for a night for $1.00, with each additional day you keep it costing another dollar. To take advantage of the codes I keep posting all you have to do is go to any Redbox, there is one outside of the McDonalds on the NW corner of campus or you can go online to their website Redbox.com to find a more convenient location, and browse through the movie selection, add the one you want to your ‘shopping cart’ and then before checking out press the ‘Enter Promo Code’ button on the bottom row of the touch-screen. You have to swipe a credit/debit card to set up your account and so that they can charge you if you decide that you can’t bear to return the new Brad Pitt flick. You have to rent the movie by midnight the day, Monday, that I post the code and return it by 9:00 PM the following day, Tuesday, to get the free rental.

Now that I’ve gotten that outta the way, here is the Promo Code for today, Tuesday September 15th: 2THS48. Feel free to e-mail me Michael.Whitfield@Drake.edu or Lanthimus2@Yahoo.com if you have any questions.

Get a degree and don't kill anyone

I think that as a person goes through life, their goals change in relation to their situation at the time. As a child, the majority of us weren’t too concerned with making sure that our 401(k) plan was diversified enough for retirement, the more enjoyable aspects of life and having fun were our primary foci; snowball fights, Legos, and cartoons were the most important things we knew. As we grew older, our world got smaller and we began to focus more on school and trying to figure out what to do after high school. Now, the point after high school, our goals deal with life after college, whether this means grad school or finding a job in the ‘real world’. I can only guess what my goals will be 5-10 years down the road, but I would assume I’ll be settling down with a lady crazy enough to want to be with me til death and I’ll be thinking about children at some point. After the kids are done with college and I’ve got grandkids on the way, I’ll probably be looking at a house on the beach someone tropical. And at the very end, I’ll be looking back on my life and preparing to meet my maker.

So, I guess the goal at the end of it all is to be able to look back with fond memories and hope for eternity floating on a nice fluffy cloud next to Gabriel. But, saying that looking forward to death is everyone’s goal seems a little depressing, so I’ll focus more on the goals I’m currently dealing with. Independence is the goal that I can say without a doubt is my top priority. I’d like to be able to provide for myself before I decide to bring anyone else into this world that I have to provide for. I think that independence is a goal that is manifested in different ways throughout life; as a kid we want to be independent enough to spend the night at a friend’s house without too much supervision, as a teenager we’d like to be able to stay out until we decide to come home, as an adult we’d like the responsibility to own our own house, and eventually we all want to be independent enough to not have to work any longer.

As far as a method or approach to reaching independence, I’m not too sure if there is a universal path to follow. Based on my definition of independence, living on your own without any supervision, I’d recommend getting an education and not committing any felonies. Neither of these are needed to live on your own; plenty of people live comfortably without a PhD and even doing 15-20 in the big house doesn’t prevent someone from living on their own after being released. An article put out by the U.S. Census Bureau back in ’02 pointed out that the average lifetime earnings for someone without a high school diploma was about $1 Million, whereas a high school graduate made $1.2 Million, Associates Degree $1.6 Million, Bachelors Degree $2.1 Million , Masters Degree $2.5 Million, and Professional Degree $4.4 Million. This is not to say that money solves all your problems just that it makes it a lot easier to deal with them. I think that the whole ‘not committing a felony’ thing is kind of self explanatory; not too many people consider themselves independent while behind bars. The bureau of Justice released statistics in 2002 dealing with the re-incarceration of former inmates which said that over 50% of those released in 1994 were back in jail within 3 years, not good odds.

My opinions on the issue of morality

Why does anyone care about what makes behavior moral or immoral?

In theory, if everyone were to act in a moral fashion, life would be great for everyone. The problem with this idea is that people are selfish and more concerned with their own advancement. The common belief is that if someone’s behavior is moral then they are doing a service to the world at large so people, being selfish, are willing to claim that their behavior is moral regardless of the reality. Another problem is that people tend to believe that their own views on morality are far superior to those of others and, in arguing the differences, tend to do things that are immoral even by their own definition, and this generally results in them doing some sort of ridiculous update to their views on what is moral in order to justify their actions. I’d say something about a slippery slope, but eh….

On the other hand, it seems that people are more willing to conform than to create; adhering to societies standards of what is “right” or “wrong” is far easier than determining it for oneself. The majority of people are of the opinion that the social norms and mores allegedly created by the entirety of society hold a higher value than the ‘average mans’ opinion because society, as a whole, has decided upon them and in this pseudo-diplomatic fashion one is taught to have a more group oriented thinking pattern, regardless of whether or not the ideas expressed as the collective belief are in fact really representative of what the collective believes.

What current assumptions do you have about what makes beliefs about what’s ethical and unethical correct or incorrect?

There is no one on this earth, or possibly in the entire universe, that knows all that is to be known about the correctness or incorrectness of someone’s beliefs and I am really not a big fan of those who have some sort of ‘I have been touched by God’ complex that inspires them to harass others about what they, the ‘touched one’, feels is ethical. For someone to claim to be omniscient and therefore able to know if someone is right or wrong about their beliefs is an incredibly narcissistic claim to make, without even mentioning how sacrilegious it is. My own personal opinion on what is ethical definitely conflicts with how I live my life, not exactly a dilemma specific to myself, but one that raises issues nonetheless. In my opinion, based on my actions as well as those of others, I think that people are more willing to share their beliefs on what is ethical than they are to divulge what they do in contrast to those beliefs; a considerable number of people, the entire human race more than likely, has witnessed something that they would describe to others as unethical regardless of the fact that they had done it themselves at one point or another. It is this sort of detachment from one’s own beliefs that upsets me the most, even though I am guilty of the crime as well. It seems as if people have taken on a more individualistic viewpoint as of late, while at the same time attempting to hold on to a set of beliefs about what is ethical regardless of their own action. Even though I am one who has conflicts between my view of what is right and the actions I partake in, it does make me wonder about the future of our beliefs in what is ethical when I see priests molesting children and Buddhist monks taking up arms.

About how to determine what’s ethical when there is disagreement or uncertainty?

The degree to which something is ethical is so relative that I cannot begin to discuss this one. Many would say that the popular or majorities belief on what is ethical is the truth, but for me to conform to that mindset would probably involve something akin to intellectual suicide. I’m not anti-societal or the member of some secret underground anti-cultural revolution, but I do believe that of the people included in the term “society” there is a ridiculously large number of people who are content in their own ignorance and believe that to deviate from it would be disastrous, regardless of how much they enjoy their current situation. I would like to believe that people know the difference between right and wrong, but the two terms are relative and trying to convince someone that their ‘right’ ideas are in fact wrong oftentimes has the opposite effect and only makes them more defensive about their beliefs.
